Where to eat in Galway
Antons is a popular, family-run Galway café, a five minute walk from Jurys Inn over the bridge. It’s a simple place, a long room with local artists’ paintings and a lot of wood - floors, tables, chairs and benches - mugs and unmatching ware.

It has been feeding a loyal lunch time trade for many years, so it’s just the kind of place visitors need to know about. The menu is pretty constant - soup (tomato and basil with brown bread and butter) sandwiches (made with home-made foccacia and served with mixed leaves and tomato - chicken, spinach and walnut is typical); salads (eg smoked duck and raspberry vinaigrette).

Particularly recommended for home baking, consistently good salads and desserts (Raspberry and almond tart, Italian chocolate cake) in an unfussy atmosphere. Great coffees, teas, infusions and freshly squeezed juice too.

A Galway Odyssey
..........But the real gem this week was a very easy spot called Anton's, on Father Griffin Road. It is a small premises, with space for about twenty to thirty. The food is simple. The menu consists of a special daily soup, a range of foccacio sandwiches, a couple of salads and drop dead gorgeous cakes.

I started with a glass of squeezed-to-order orange juice. This was just what I needed. The room had the encouraging blend of fairly arty types and business people.

I had the soup, a piquant tomato and beetroot number that was perfect in depth of flavour and consistency. It was served with scrumptious brown bread. I also had a smoked ham and Emmenthal foccacio, which came with a nice little salad.

With a thick, authentic espress and a pot of home made blackberry jam to take back, I drove eastwards sated and reminiscing.

Where I like to eat....
...... for lunch it has to be Anton's in Galway for spicy tuna salad followed by one of their brilliant desserts - any of the tarts or the dark chocolate cake .........

....this little cafe specialises in healthy yet yummy lunchtime food, featuring tasty, generous sandwiches and salads. The emphasis is on focaccia rather than a fry-up, but you can indulge yourself with the homemade desserts offered. Anton's fills up quickly for lunch, so sneak in early to be sure of getting a table.
